Chapter 14

“How was your ride?” Raven asked, as Emily entered the room pulling off her riding gloves and throwing them onto the side table, striding over to the window. She glanced out into the yard and watched as the stable boy strolled away with Lady in tow. Then turned to see Raven detaching the infant from breast feeding and removed the small blanket she had laid over the child. Placing it across her shoulder, she raised the child and began to rub her back in slow, circular motions.

“You know I didn't just go for a ride, I went to see Brad.”

“Oh, I see. What did you want to see him about?” Raven asked. A soft satisfied burp came from the child. Raven stood and place the baby in a wicker basket on the coffee table, walked over to the drinks table and poured two glasses of lemonade.

She handed a glass to Emily, who sat on the window box looking out on the front yard, peppered with bluebonnets, growing wild along the white picket fence surrounding the large house. Emily turned her gaze back to the room. “The fence looks new,” she said, taking the glass.

“It is fairly new. We had to have it built after Jackson was born or we’d still looking for him out in the wilderness." Raven laughed, and sat next to Emily and placed her free hand on Emily’s knee, in a knowing way. “What happened?”

“I invited him to dinner?”

“Oh, Emily, why would you do that without checking with Lance first?”

Emily’s eyes widened, in indignation. “I didn't think I needed to ask permission to have a guest visit me. Besides, Lance said he was allowed to visit me here.”

‘Visit, yes, but not bake bread. Don't get me wrong, I like Brad, he stood up for me when Lance brought me here all tied up. But Lance is my husband. I can't go against him. Something happened between the two of them. I don't know the details, but Lance said he didn't want him here anymore and I have to respect his feelings on the matter.” Raven took a sip of her drink, then sighed.

Pushing back a few straggling hairs from her face, Emily shoulders slumped and she sighed too. “Well, you don't have to worry about him gracing your precious dining table and giving you husband indigestion. He said no.”

“Is that why you’re upset?” Raven asked, placing a hand on Emily’s arm.

Emily shook her head in the negative. “I don't know why I'm upset. It’s not like I know him that well. I've seen him twice now. But he did ask to call on me and then he didn't bother. I wanted to know why. I guess now I have my answer. He doesn't like me a much as I thought he did.”

Raven gasped. “You can’t know that from one unaccepted invitation. I saw the way he looked at you. Did he give you a reason why he couldn’t come?”

“He said, he had something important to do out in the wild.
